SETx-UIFL Research Communication
Project Overview
Overall Purpose
As decided at the Annual Meeting, we need each team to produce a set of “1-pagers” (roughly 3 per team). These documents will communicate our key findings to community partners in an accessible, visually appealing format. They will help translate our research into actionable insights for Southeast Texas communities. They should be informative yet approachable, honoring the collaborative work we’ve done with local partners.
Place your completed 1-pagers in the One_pagers folder on Box:

Each theme team should produce approximately 3 one-pagers covering the following topics:
Climate Theme (3 1-pagers)
- Heat Stress – Increasing temperatures and their impacts on communities
- Clustering of Extreme Precipitation – Patterns of intense rainfall events
- Tropical Cyclone Changes – How hurricanes and tropical storms are evolving
Water Theme (5 1-pagers)
- Identifying Hot Spots of Urban Pavement Degradation – Where flooding damages infrastructure
- Risk-Based Framework – Tools for assessing water-related risks
- Flooding Modeling and Mapping – High-resolution flood predictions
- Flood Mitigation Across Scales – Solutions from household to regional levels
- Wetland Health – Status and importance of coastal wetlands
Air Theme (3 1-pagers)
- Sources of Air Toxics Emissions in SETX – Map hotspots of chemicals, concerns for health, strategies for safety
- Indoor vs Outdoor Air Quality Differences – How pollution enters homes and protection strategies
- Accidental Release of Gas Phase Pollutant – Emergency response and community safety
Equity Theme (3 1-pagers)

Overall Key Findings (1 combined 1-pager)
TxTC and KMP working on this – synthesizes major findings across all themes
Content Structure & Outline
Each 1-pager should follow this structure:
Title
Clear, compelling title that tells readers what the 1-pager is about
Subtitle
Brief description that draws readers in and sets context
Problem
(50-70 words)
What is the issue? Why does it matter to Southeast Texas communities?
Method
(50-100 words)
General description of what you did. Keep it accessible – explain your research approach in plain language that community members can understand.
Local Involvement
(50-100 words)
Describe how local partners, agencies, or task force members participated and provided input. This section honors the community collaboration that made the work possible.
Note: If there was no local involvement, you can omit this section and expand on other sections or add more graphics.
Findings
(~100 words total)
Your key results and what they mean. This can be chunked and broken into parts if that’s appropriate (e.g., 2-4 main findings with brief explanations).
Figures/Tables
Include 2-4 figures or tables with clear captions explaining what they show
Images/Photos
Minimum 1 image – could be field work, community engagement, or relevant local scenes
Contact Person
Include name, email address, and professional photo of the lead researcher or primary contact
Writing Guidelines
- Accessible Reading – Use simple, clear language. Avoid jargon or explain technical terms.
- Approachable Tone – Write as if speaking to a neighbor, not an academic audience.
- Be Brief – Respect the word counts. Every word should add value.
- Honor Partners – Acknowledge local contributions and frame findings in terms of community benefit.
